Any special occasion deserves a Heirloom Tomato and Burrata Salad served with fresh basil, olive oil and delectable spices. I learned about burrata on my latest travels to California where I have enjoyed the true farm to table experience in restaurants like Redd Wood located in the Napa valley area and where the chef served us a special dish with burrata and tomatoes.
But what is burrata, this is a fresh Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream. Has a solid outer curd made from fresh mozzarella, which is formed into a hollow pouch, then filled with a soft, stringy curd and fresh cream.
When you cut the burrata it oozes this beautiful creamy and buttery cheese. Making it perfect to serve as an appetizer and also as part of a salad or main dish. The taste is milky and the creaminess is just remarkable.
Heirloom Tomato and Burrata Salad
Ingredients
- 1 fresh burrata cheese
- 1 kumato tomato
- 1 yellow tomato
- 8 cherry tomatoes
- 1 bunch of fresh basil leaves
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of kalamata and green olive tapenade
- Cracked pepper to taste
Instructions
- Clean the produce and slice the tomatoes in rounds.
- Place the tomato slices in a nice serving plate and garnish with the basil leaves
- Add the burrata cheese in the middle, garnish with a floret of basil leaves
- Dress with the tapenade, drizzle the olive oil and sprinkle fresh ground pepper
- Enjoy immediately and pair with crusty bread
For me, burrata is a delectable cheese that pairs perfect with tomatoes, but also with sugar beets, carrots and fava beans or you can just enjoy it with crusty bread. Being the holidays such a special time of the year I thought would be great to bring to my table some of the flavors from my foodie travels.
And to my surprise I found fresh burrata from a local farm in my area, which I combined with heirloom kumato and yellow tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and fresh basil from my garden.
Finish with olive oil and a tapenade made with kalamata and green olives resulting in a decadent Heirloom Tomato and Burrata Salad that will be one of my holiday table star dishes.
I have garnished this salad emulating a wreath, which is perfect for a Christmas theme table. I think that when presenting the food in a special way this makes the dinner and your guests feel welcome due to the special touches and attention to detail.
You can serve this Heirloom Tomato and Burrata Salad as a starter or as an appetizer for the cocktail hour. Everyone will enjoy this option because it is fresh and so tasty.
Best wishes during this holiday time and a blessed Christmas.
Happy holidays!
